Set above the historic East Shore of Lake Maxinkuckee, The Vonnegut House is a landmark lakefront retreat with more than 135 years of history in Culver, Indiana.
Originally built in 1889 as a summer retreat for the Vonnegut family of Indianapolis, the home has been carefully restored while preserving the character of a grand Midwest lake house. Today, it offers generous gathering spaces, panoramic lake views, a full-length porch overlooking the water, and the kind of setting made for family gatherings, Culver weekends, and long summer days on Lake Max.
The house accommodates up to 15 guests across eight bedrooms and four bathrooms, with flexible sleeping arrangements for families and multi-generational groups.
The Vonnegut family's connection to Lake Maxinkuckee spans generations. The East Shore became a summer retreat for prominent Indianapolis families in the late nineteenth century, drawn by the lake, cooling western breezes and sunset views. The Vonnegut House remains part of that history today.
The home was preserved and restored beginning in 2013, retaining its historic character while returning it to life as a gathering place on the lake.
Step outside and Lake Maxinkuckee is the centerpiece of the stay. Spend the day on the water, gather on the porch as the sun sets across the lake, or explore the traditions of Culver and the historic East Shore.
Culver Academies is nearby, making the house particularly well suited for Academy families, reunions, graduations and seasonal events. The house's own rental program notes that some Academy-event dates are reserved years in advance.
Downtown Culver, boating and the surrounding Lake Max community are all within easy reach.
This isn't a generic vacation rental. It's a historic lake home with more than a century of stories behind it—and room for the next generation to create their own.
Come for Lake Maxinkuckee. Stay for the porch, the sunsets, the history, and time together.
